Do air-purifying plants really clean indoor air?

Yes, modestly. NASA's Clean Air Study and follow-up research show that certain species metabolise common indoor VOCs — formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene, xylene — through their leaves and root microbiome. The effect per plant is small; the value comes from density (one specimen per ~10 sqm) plus regular care so the foliage stays active.

Which plants are safest around staff and clients?

Areca palm, Kentia palm, Boston fern, parlour palm, bamboo palm and most calatheas are pet- and human-safe. Peace lily, snake plant, ZZ and pothos are highly effective purifiers but mildly toxic if chewed — keep them out of reach in childcare or pet-friendly floors.

How many plants do we actually need for a 2,000 sqft office?

For a measurable air-quality lift, we plan for roughly 1 large specimen (8–10 inch pot) per 100 sqft, weighted toward open-plan zones, meeting rooms and reception. For a 2,000 sqft floor that's typically 18–22 plants across 4–6 species, mixing tall structural pieces with desk-height fillers.

Will they survive low light and air-conditioning?

The species below are picked precisely for sealed, AC-heavy commercial interiors. Snake plant, ZZ, pothos, aglaonema and dracaena tolerate 200–500 lux and dry air. Ferns and calatheas need humidity trays or grouping. Our AMC programme manages this so plants don't quietly die in month four.

Why it matters

Indoor air is 2–5× more polluted than the air outside.

Sealed buildings, MDF furniture, printer toner, cleaning solvents and synthetic carpets continuously off-gas formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene. The EPA ranks indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health.

The density rule

One large specimen per 100 sqft.

Two plants in a 2,000 sqft floor look good and do almost nothing. Air-quality benefit scales with leaf surface area, so the rule we plan around is one 8–10 inch specimen per ~100 sqft, biased toward open-plan zones, meeting rooms and reception.
